About eSIM
What is an eSIM?
An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM card built into a device that performs the same job as a physical SIM card but is activated remotely, without any hardware insertion. The "e" stands for embedded. A small chip already inside your phone stores one or more carrier profiles, and you switch between them in software.
How does an eSIM work?
For a step-by-step of how it works on the eSIM Copilot platform, see how it works.
What is the difference between an eSIM and a physical SIM?
Both identify you to a mobile network. The difference is mechanical: a physical SIM is a removable plastic card, and an eSIM is a chip embedded in the device that can be reprogrammed over the air. Day to day, the calling, texting, and data work identically. The main practical change is that you can hold and switch between several profiles on the same device without physically swapping anything.
Is an eSIM better than a physical SIM?
It depends on what you value. eSIMs let you activate a new line in minutes, carry multiple profiles on one device, and add a travel data plan without waiting for shipping. The one real trade-off is that you cannot move an eSIM to a new phone by physically swapping a card; the profile is tied to that device’s chip, and you either re-download it onto the new phone (where supported) or buy a new plan.
Can I have more than one eSIM on my phone?
Most modern phones can store several eSIM profiles at once but only keep one or two active for calls and data at a time. iPhone 13 and later support two active eSIMs simultaneously. On Android, dual active eSIM is model-specific; check your device settings under SIM manager or Connections.
02
Device compatibility
Does my phone support eSIM?
Most flagship phones from 2020 onward do. iPhone XS and later, Samsung Galaxy S20 and later, Google Pixel 3 and later, and most premium Android handsets from Motorola, OnePlus, Sony, and Xiaomi support eSIM. To check on iPhone, open Settings then General then About and look for an EID number. On Android, open Settings then Connections (or Network & internet) then SIM manager.
Which iPhones have eSIM?
iPhone XS, XR, and every model since support eSIM. iPhone 14 and later sold in the United States removed the physical SIM tray entirely and are eSIM-only. Outside the US, iPhone 14 and 15 still ship with a physical SIM slot in addition to eSIM. Every current model supports at least two active eSIMs at once.
Does Samsung Galaxy support eSIM?
Galaxy S20 and later, the Z Fold and Z Flip series, the Note 20, and the A54 onward all support eSIM in most markets. A few regional variants, including some sold in mainland China and certain Asian markets, ship without eSIM enabled, so check the model number against Samsung’s spec page before you buy a plan.
Does Google Pixel support eSIM?
Every Pixel from the Pixel 3 onward supports eSIM. The Pixel 7 and later support dual active eSIMs. As with any device, the carrier also has to support eSIM provisioning on your account, so if you are moving an existing number across rather than installing a travel plan, confirm with your home carrier first.
Can I use eSIM if my phone is locked to a carrier?
A carrier-locked phone can only activate eSIM profiles from the locking carrier. Third-party travel eSIMs and business eSIM profiles will fail to install or activate on a locked device. Most carriers will unlock a phone once the contract is paid off or after a set number of months. Unlock the device first, then come back to the eSIM.

Activation and installation
How do I install an eSIM on iPhone?
- Connect to Wi-Fi. The phone needs internet to download the profile.
- Open Settings then Cellular (or Mobile Data) then Add eSIM.
- Choose Use QR Code and scan the code from your provider, or paste the activation details.
- Label the line (for example, “Travel” or “Work”) so it is easy to find later.
- Choose which line is used for data and which for iMessage and calls.
How do I install an eSIM on Android?
- Connect to Wi-Fi.
- Open Settings then Connections (or Network & internet) then SIM manager then Add eSIM.
- Scan the QR code from your provider or enter the activation details manually.
- Name the profile and choose whether it is your default for calls, texts, and data.
What is the difference between installing and activating an eSIM?
Installing means downloading the profile onto the phone. Activating means the plan goes live and your data allowance starts counting. For most travel eSIM plans, activation happens automatically when the phone first registers on a mobile network in the destination country. Install at home on Wi-Fi, then activate when you land.
My eSIM is not activating. What now?
eSIM Copilot customers can get walk-through help from the Help Centre.
Can I move my eSIM to a new phone?
Sometimes. Apple supports eSIM Quick Transfer between iPhones for many carriers, and Google offers a similar tool on Pixel. Most travel eSIMs and prepaid data plans are tied to one device’s EID and cannot be moved; if you change phone, you typically buy a new plan rather than transfer the old one. Check the provider’s terms before you assume the eSIM will come with you.

Travel and roaming

How do I get mobile data in another country with an eSIM?
- Before you fly, buy a travel eSIM data plan that covers your destination.
- Install the profile on Wi-Fi while you are still at home.
- On arrival, turn the travel eSIM line on and switch your data line to it.
- Turn on data roaming for that line. This sounds wrong but it is correct, and we cover why below.
Does eSIM work in Europe?
Yes. Every EU country and most non-EU European countries are covered by the major travel eSIM providers, including the UK, Switzerland, and Norway. Coverage and speeds depend on which local network your provider has roaming agreements with. If you are taking a multi-country European trip, a regional Europe plan is usually cheaper than several single-country plans.
Do I need to turn data roaming on or off when I use a travel eSIM?
On. This catches a lot of people. A travel eSIM uses local partner networks in your destination, which the phone classifies as roaming. If data roaming is off, the travel line will not connect to the internet. The trick is to turn data roaming on for the travel eSIM line specifically, and leave it off for your home line so you do not get billed by your home carrier.
Can I keep my home number active and use a travel eSIM at the same time?
Yes, and this is the usual setup. Keep your home SIM or home eSIM active for calls and texts on your normal number, and use the travel eSIM for mobile data. You will not miss messages, you will not pay roaming on your home plan because no data is going through it, and you do not need to swap anything.

Plans, top-up, and account management
How do I top up data on my eSIM?
Two ways, depending on the provider. Either buy a new plan against the same eSIM profile (the profile stays on the phone, only the data allowance changes), or renew the existing plan through the provider’s app or web portal. Either way, you do not need to reinstall anything.
Can I add more data to an existing plan?
Usually yes. Most providers offer top-ups against an in-progress plan, applied to the same profile without any reinstall. eSIM Copilot top-ups apply within minutes of payment, and the new allowance is visible in the app alongside what is left of the original plan.
Does my eSIM plan expire?
Most travel eSIM plans have a validity window that begins either at purchase or on first use, depending on the provider. After the window closes, any unused data is forfeit. The eSIM profile itself stays on the device, so you can buy another plan against it later without reinstalling. Read the validity terms on the plan page before you buy.
Can I share eSIM data as a hotspot?
Most travel eSIM data plans support hotspot and tethering, and the phone settings work the same as with a physical SIM. A small number of providers either restrict hotspot or count it at a different rate, so check the plan terms. Sharing data with a laptop on a long-haul work trip is one of the most common reasons people buy a travel eSIM, and we keep it unrestricted.
Can I use an eSIM for calls and texts, not just data?
Most travel eSIMs are data-only. You make calls and send texts through internet-based apps over the eSIM’s data connection while your home SIM stays on for traditional voice and SMS on your real number. Some carriers do sell voice-and-data eSIMs as a permanent home line, but the travel category is almost entirely data.

eSIMs for business
Can I buy and manage eSIMs for my whole team?
See eSIM for business for the full feature set.
How do I roll out eSIMs to employees without IT tickets?
Employees ask for what they need in plain English from inside Slack, Microsoft Teams, or WhatsApp, and the eSIM Copilot agent handles the request: provisioning a plan, sending the QR code, and updating the admin dashboard. IT does not have to triage the ticket, and the employee does not have to leave the tool they were already using.
Is eSIM safe for business use?
eSIM profiles are encrypted and tied to a device’s EID, so they cannot be cloned the way a stolen physical SIM sometimes can. If a device is lost or an employee leaves, an admin can disable or delete the profile remotely from the dashboard. eSIM Copilot adds SSO, role-based access, and audit logs on top of that.
What happens to the eSIM when an employee leaves?
